China: Millionaire fails high school graduation exam for the 27th time

Jun 16, 2026

“I don’t know yet if I’ll try it again next year,” admitted Liang Shi, 56, looking tired.

After failing the “gaokao,” the dreaded Chinese university entrance exam, for the 27th time, 56-year-old Chinese millionaire Liang Shi wonders if he will ever realize his dream of attending Sichuan University. Liang Shi can nevertheless be proud of his social success, having started his career in a low-level factory job before founding his own thriving building materials company, which made him a millionaire.

But the man in his fifties has always harbored a frustration: not having obtained a high enough score on the “gaokao” to gain admission to the prestigious Sichuan University, in the southwestern Chinese province where he lives. After failing the exam the first time at the age of 16, this determined man retook it nearly ten times, always in vain, before finally having to stop due to the age limit (25 years old) imposed at the time. AFP
