The secretary general of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has resigned amid a crisis for African football.

Véron Mosengo-Omba announced his retirement in a statement, but his departure comes in the wake of the controversies surrounding the decision to strip Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) title and to postpone the women’s competition at the last minute.

These incidents have plunged the CAF, the governing body of African football, into a crisis of confidence.

In his statement published on Sunday, Mr. Mosengo-Omba alluded to the controversies encountered during his term.

“Now that I have been able to dispel the suspicions that some have tried to cast on me, I can retire in complete serenity and without constraint, leaving CAF more prosperous than ever,” wrote Mosengo-Omba, deputy to CAF President Patrice Motsepe.

Aged 66, he has been criticized for remaining secretary general beyond the mandatory retirement age of 63.

Some employees also accused him of creating a toxic work environment, although an investigation following staff complaints cleared him.

Mosengo-Omba, originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo and also holding Swiss citizenship, was appointed Secretary General in March 2021.

According to Reuters, CAF’s director of competitions, Samson Adamu, will serve as interim president. The Senegalese Football Federation (CAF) is awaiting the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) regarding Senegal’s appeal against the stripping of its African championship title.

Senegal is appealing the CAF appeals body’s decision to overturn its 1-0 victory over host nation Morocco in last month’s Africa Cup of Nations final.
During the match, the Senegalese players left the pitch in protest when, with the score at 0-0, a penalty was awarded to Morocco in stoppage time.

Upon their return to the field after an interruption of approximately 17 minutes, Morocco missed the penalty and Senegal scored the winning goal in extra time.

Following an appeal by the Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), the CAF finally ruled that Senegal had forfeited and that Morocco had been declared the winner 3-0.
