Le G5 Sahel n’a toujours pas reçu de moyens pour fonctionner (président Aziz)

The G5 Sahel, which includes Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso and Chad, has still not received the resources to function, despite numerous promises from the international community, lamented Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz.

“We asked for 560 million euros to start and 130 million per year to operate, but we have received nothing so far,” he lamented during a press conference held Thursday evening in Nouakchott.

Ould Abdel Aziz added that the G5 Sahel is facing “a wall of incomprehension” from the UN, which, according to him, does not want to help it.

Drawing a comparison, he pointed out that the UN force in Mali receives $1 billion in funding, even though it lacks a “clear mission.”
In his view, the UN force in northern Mali “must be a combat mission, not a stabilization mission.”

Ould Abdel Aziz considered that the UN had targeted the wrong issue in its handling of insecurity in the Sahel and that it does not understand what is happening in that country.

The Mauritanian president’s press conference comes 36 hours before a presidential election in which he is not a candidate. APA
