Guinée: la junte militaire reporte sine die le retour à la démocratie multipartite

The military junta indefinitely postpones the return to multi-party democracy while dissolving major opposition parties.

Guinea is sliding towards a harsh dictatorship and centralized power in the hands of a single man. Following a disputed presidential election that excluded the main leaders of the Guinean opposition, the Minister of Territorial Administration announced, on the orders of the head of the junta and self-proclaimed president Mamady Doumbouya, the dissolution of 40 political parties, including the UFDG of Cellou Dalein Diallo, the RPG of ousted president Alpha Condé, and the UFR of Sidya Touré, for failing to meet their legal obligations, according to a statement released this Friday, March 6. These three parties, active for more than three decades, represent the main political formations in the country and hold more than 90 percent of the national electorate.
Another major political party banned by the exceptional regime in Conakry is the Democratic Party of Guinea (PDG), the party that led Guinea to independence in 1958 under President Ahmed Sékou Touré. Also noteworthy is the disappearance of the PUP (Party of Unity and Progress), created in the 1990s to support the 24-year presidency of General Lansana Conté.
Prime Minister Bah Oury recently inaugurated a daycare center, expressing his hope that supporters of the junta would form a political party to support the initiatives of the Head of State.
In a forceful Sunday address to all Guineans, Cellou Dalein Diallo, leader of the Union of Democratic Forces of Guinea (UFDG) and former leader of the opposition, believes that the self-proclaimed president of Guinea has overstepped the mark and calls for resistance. “Faced with Mamadi Doumbouya and his clan, only resistance will allow us to recover our individual and collective freedoms as well as our confiscated rights,” he asserts, adding that “the dictatorship will not prevail, the tyrants will all fall, be assured of that!” With this dissolution, unpredictable in its consequences, Guinea is sinking into a grave situation under the rule of a single man in illegal and illegitimate power.
